To make it more exciting our second time around, The Small Space Race Contest is a open to various types of entries. We are seeking high quality submissions that we can learn from. The following types of entries are accepted: photos of small living rooms, dining rooms, dorm rooms, studio apartments, bedrooms, home offices and unique entries, such as bedrooms created from closets. Sorry, but we will not be accepting submissions of nurseries or kid’s rooms in this contest.

Who Can Enter?

Entrants must be at least 18 years old.
Sadly, due to legal reasons and shipping limitations, only U.S. residents are eligible to win prizes. However, residents of other countries may submit entries in order to support the site, but aren’t eligible to win any of the prizes offered.
Only one entry per household, please.
Photos must me taken only of the residence you are currently living in. And of course, you the room you’re taking photos of must be small.

Prizes

Prizes are courtsey of Simplicity Sofas and Furniture for Small Spaces.

There are 3 prizes awarded to winners…

Grand prize winner receives a cash prize of $300, a regular or apartment-sized sofa, a chair and storage ottoman.
First place winner receives a cash prize of $100 and a sleeper sofa.
Second place winner receives a cash prize of $75 and a chair and a half.

How to Submit…

Submit at least 5 photos of your small space. Photos should be large and clear (i.e. at least 600 pixels or larger). Click here to find out how we recommend taking your photos.
You can choose to take photos of one of the following rooms. Whichever room you choose is your choice…
- living room
- entire dorm room
- entire studio apartment
- bedroom
- dining room
- unique makeshift room (i.e. closets made into bedrooms)
- home office
In 50 words or more, tell us how you’ve made the most of your small space (i.e. what makes it unique, space saving furniture you used, etc.).
Try to avoid sending photos with timestamps on them.

Additional Information

The deadline for this contest is now September 15, 2008.
Only entries that are posted on this site are eligible to win. We will select what we consider to be the best submissions out of all entries, and only those submissions will be published on the website and be eligible to win cash and furniture prizes.
Once we’ve posted all of the qualifying entries, 10 finalists will then be announced on September 22, 2008.
We will then go on to select 3 winners from the 10 finalists. The 3 winners will be announced on September 30, 2008.
Cash prizes, which are courtesy of Furniture for Small Spaces, will be sent out upon announcement of winners. Furniture prizes, which are courtesy of Simplicity Sofas, may take longer due to order fulfillment and shipping requirements.
Furniture prizes must be ordered within 90 days of the end of the contest (September 30, 2008) or all prizes will be forfeited by the prize winner. Prizes have a zero dollar cash value and can not be exchanged for cash or credit from Simplicity Sofas, Furniture For Small Spaces or any of their assigned. Once the product is ordered, it may not be cancelled or exchanged and once delivered, standard delivery and shipping agreements are enforced. I have now chosen the winners for the Small Space Race Contest. Although all contestants did exceptionally well, it’s time to spotlight the winners for doing an outstanding job in all categories in which they were judged.

How were Winners Chosen?

You may be wondering what the point system is (above) beside each contestants entry. Well… it’s the point system I used to judge the finalists in order to come up with the winners.

I judged each room under the 4 following categories…

Education
Effort
Creativity
Design

Education, creativity and design were all visual categories, which means contestants were judged on how much we learned from them by looking at their small space, how well they designed it and how creative they were with their decorating efforts.

However, the effort category was a written category and depended upon how well they focused on mentioning how they decorated their small space. In short, how well they answered the following…

“In 50 words or more, tell us how you’ve made the most of your small space (i.e. what makes it unique, space saving furniture you used, etc.)”

Each category was worth 10 points, allowing 40 points to be the total number of points that could be earned.

Once the finalists received their points in each category for how well they did, that determined who the winners were…

Antonia got 38 points and that put her in the lead.
Karen got 34 points and that put her in first place.
Matthew got 33 points and that put him in second place.
