Small Writing Desks: When What’s out There is Just Too Big

Q. I found your web site and am looking for a small desk to replace the one I got in grade school. It is 15 inches deep by 46 inches wide. It has 4 drawers. All the desks I have seen are deeper like 24 inches deep. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Mary

A. I do have a suggestion, if you’re up for thinking outside of the box a little.

It sounds like your desk is very narrow which got me thinking it’s possible you have a writing desk (as opposed to a basic computer desk). I realize I could be wrong but during my search I noticed that those are the measurements that seemed consistent with a lot of writing desks.

Nonetheless it led me to thinking about console and sofa tables. They provide the exact type of measurements that you’re looking for (46″L x 15″D).

So you could easily use those as a desk if you’re up for it. I also notated the height of most sofa tables and they seem to be around desk height as well. A nice standard height for a lot of writing desks seems to be 29″. You’ll find that a lot of sofa and console tables are also around this height.

If you like this idea and want to use a sofa/console table as a desk, of course it’s best to look for some that look as much like regular desks as possible.

That is, unless you don’t mind the slight difference in appearence for the advantage of getting one at lower cost. I will list all the ones I came across for your reference. However, you may want to go to some local stores and check some out there. It may help you clarify whether you like this idea or not.

If you decide to use one as a desk, you may want to avoid sofa/console tables with second/bottom shelves—as those look like they won’t work as desks because the shelves will get in the way.

Sofa/Console Tables that you might want to consider…

  • Alden Sofa Table

They are using the coffee table in the photo that you see on the page. Be certain to click on the “View Larger Image and Other Colors” link to see the picture of the sofa table. This sofa table is actually the same size as your current desk 46″W x 15″D (x 30″H).

  • South Hampton Console Table (Black and White)

Dimensions are 47.24L x 15.75W x 29.5H. Be certain NOT to get shipping/packing dimensions mixed up with actual table dimensions. The actual table dimensions are located under “Features” on Target.com. You’ll have to click “See More Information” to see them.

  • Dolce Dark Walnut Console Table

Dimensions are 29.5Hx13.75Wx48L”. Be certain to check out the reviews on this one since there are over 80 reviews. If you’re considering it, it may help you make your mind up.

There are other tables out there, of course. I only listed ones in which I thought you might have great interest in, but by all means consider looking
for others as well if you like.

Anyway, I hope the information I offered helped.

Feel free to write me anytime concerning your thoughts or if you simply have any more questions. Have a wonderful day, Mary and good luck in your search!
