Small Homes: Crystal’s Modest Living Room

I hope you enjoy viewing my space. I know I do!! Although it’s tight living I’d have to admit this has been my best apartment.

Highlights of Crystal’s Room

  • The first photo is a view of my living room taken in the small space between my kitchen and dining room. From here you can see how I have made use of the foundational focal point, the brick wall. Of course if it were up to me, I would expose this brick, but I can chuck that up to apartment living. At any rate, the apartment is 800 square feet and the portion of the home which I have invited you into is to say the smallest.

  • The second photo is again of the brick wall and my furniture. This picture was taken from under my dining room table, LOL, what an experience.

  • The third photo is of the living room space opposite the brick wall. Yes I have chairs instead of a sofa in my living room. When I moved here about four months ago, it was easy to see that too much furniture would easily eat up the space that I have. So instead I decided to use the two chairs that would not be used from by dining room set. I live alone with my two year old son… We don’t entertain much, so there really WAS no need at first to spend the extra time, money and energy on furniture that would not be used (well I’m sure the toddler would find a way to use it). Now four months into my arrangement I am missing the comfort of a nice couch… this just doesn’t feel complete.

  • The fourth photo again of the brick wall, now taken from the chair in the corner of the third photo. As you can see there is a small book collection, which is basically what this room has been used for, reading. There is something calming about this room that makes reading an oasis. I usually dim the room, light some candles, turn on the reading light and escape to wherever my book is taking me.

  • Picture five, here is where I dine. This area is about 5 ft x 9 ft, so to keep it simple I have a wooden drop leaf table. I don’t know about you, but when I am bored I rearrange furniture. Not much that I can do here, so when I am bored I collapse or expand my table, center it, push it against the wall, whatever. Trust me it’s fun!!

  • No small space is complete until you have seen my kitchen. This is the galley of all galleys. As a single mom I do my best to provide full course meals to my son in this one person kitchen. On the bright side I can really multi-task in here, it’s all in arms reach.

  • Note: Thank you for the tour Crystal, that is a nice minimalist approach you have there!
