Small Homes: Tammy’s Romantic Retreat
This was a fairly newer home and after a couple of years I got tired of the white walls. The furniture was left over from the post college collection and I wanted to be proud of where my guests would stay when they come visit. There are a lot of hand made touches in the room such as the plates on the wall were home made and the quilt is a 40 year old quilt my grandmother made me.
I travel to the Southeast a lot for work and I wanted a coastal inspired room, which was the motivation for the white furniture and colored walls. Various trips to coastal towns in the East have helped to fill the room with neat memories of past trips.

Highlights of Tammy’s Room
-
Paint your walls a cool color
Tammy’s room is another example of how green can bring a room to life. If you don’t believe me… check out the before photo she sent in and notate the huge difference in how her room looks now compared to then:
Big difference isn’t it? It doesn’t even look like the same room if you ask me. Color made a HUGE difference. Of course she added other things to it in order to bring it to life, but you can see how the color changed the overall look and feel, can’t you?

Keep windows simple
I’m sure I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating. You can make your small room feel a lot larger with a minimalist approach. In Tammy’s case, she used a valance and opted to avoid long heavy looking window treatments, like drapes. In a room like hers it really worked well, wouldn’t you say? -
Use a few large pieces of furniture
Sometimes we forget that large pieces of furniture really do aid in helping a room look spacious. Again, Tammy’s room is a good example of how a few large pieces can work in your favor rather than a multitude of small pieces. Every piece of furniture in her room has a decorative use: from the armoire to the lamps. She’s played on the nice creamy whites and tied everything together with beautiful floral arrangements. -
Thank you so much for sending in your photos, Tammy. I have learned a lot from you! You’ve made it all look so easy.
