Small Space Questions: Increase Kitchen Counter Space
Hi Tameka… I hope you had a wonderful holiday and your new year is starting out great!I thought of a few more questions regarding small spaces and remembered how helpful you were with my desk/bookcase issue. I decided on the floral printed desk which is perfect!!
Just to refresh your memory. I am living in an efficiency apartment. There are 3 rooms. A full bathroom, a bedroom and a living room/kitchen area.
Carpeting covers the entire 2 rooms. The kitchen consists a fridge, then a very small counter, a sink and small stove which is against the wall. Because the room is covered with carpeting, I have 2 bamboo like floor mats to divide the kitchen from the living room.
Problem is the ends keep curling up and the mats slip around which is really annoying. So I want to either find something different and kind of unique but still very practical to catch any spills with easy clean up. Or find a solution for the mats I already have.
The dimensions of the mats (to give you an idea of the space ) are each 47″ length by 28 1/2″ width. There are 2 so doubled the entire area (length) to be covered would be 94″.
Then because I only have a tiny counter, what could I buy to use for extra counter space that could be folded up and stored away behind my sofa.
It would have to be something very functional.
Any ideas you have would be appreciated.
I look forward to hearing from you. Please let me know if you need anymore information.
Thank you
–Amy
Hi Amy,
I had a wonderful holiday and New Year. I hope you did too Amy! Also, I hope you’re doing well today, and thanks so much for writing in.
Sure, I’ll love to take a shot and seeing what I can do to help you out again. I appreciate you explaining everything in thorough detail. Everything made perfect sense. I have done some research now and think these solutions may be of use to you. I’ll start with the curling problem you said you had with your mats.
I did some research and found an answer that might solve your problem. Someone suggested using double-sided tape that works for carpet. They suggested that you can get it at your local hardware store, like Home Depot, Lowes, etc. So you can also read the entire answer, here is where I found it.
As for your issue with the rugs slipping. There are non-slip pads, rug liners or what is known as rug savers that you can put under your mats to keep them from slipping. From your rug measurements, I came up with these two non-slip pads.

As for your kitchen, you said you wanted something that could offer you extra counter space but fold away behind your sofa when not in use. I came up several kitchen carts that could do the job for you, but in order for them to fit behind your sofa you may need to allow a few inches of space between your sofa and the wall so they will fit. I guess it all depends on your situation.

Anyway, I hope that helped Amy. Or at least perhaps it will set you on the right path if you don’t like those options.
