I came across this cool sofa when surfing the web. What I was thinking was this would be a really cool idea to copy. Particularly for small kid’s rooms. It would fit right in there. Can you imagine your little girl or boy’s room having a cool stuffed animal sofa like this?

I bet it would it would catch attention.

This would also be budget-friendly in the right situation–with a house full of old stuffed animals collecting dust. I’m not sure how you’d go about making it, but I’m guessing some needle and thread would be part of the bargain. If not thread… perhaps something thicker and stronger?

My daughter loves her bedspread as it has her favorite Disney Princesses (Cinderella is her all time favorite) and she loves the dollhouse/bookshelf. She keeps dolls, book, stuffed animal and what ever else she can think of in it (it is nice to have a place to hide everything in when it is time for bed).

Highlights of Noreen’s Room…

• Use only swags and a valance as a minimalist approach.
  I can definitely see why Noreen loves her daughter’s bedroom. Very nicely done indeed. And Noreen has done such a good job at explaining things that I’m speechless. However, I will try to explain what I like about the room from my viewpoint, anyway.

  One of the things that caught my eye about Noreen’s daughter’s bedroom was the valance. I was going to make mention of this some time or another but now is as good a time as any.

  If you have a small bedroom and feel draperies or panels would weigh your room down, simply decorating your window with a valance (and swags) provides a nice clean effect. It’s a great minimalist approach, I think. It also allows a lot of light in the room. And we all know a lot of light can really open up a small space.

• Decorate wall with stuffed animals.
  Noreen mentioned the shelving, but don’t let it escape you how the stuffed animals and dolls were used to decorate the walls. Isn’t that a great idea? If it isn’t obvious to you, this is a wonderful alternative or addition to pictures and knickknacks.

• Clear clutter with a hide-away dollhouse bookcase.
  Last but not least, I love the idea of a dollhouse bookshelf. Isn’t it the perfect multi-purpose piece of furniture for a girl’s room? The wonderful thing about dollhouse bookcases is that they don’t even look like they’re anything but dollhouses.

  Like Noreen so eloquently put it, you can put various things in them—from dolls to books and then of course, turn it against the wall and everything is hidden and in order. That’s a really great item, Noreen. Thanks so much for pointing it out!

Highlights of Victoria’s Room

• Victoria did a wonderful job at highlighting her own room.
  So, mainly I’ll let her speak for herself and only add a few things in to praise her for doing such a good job.

• Buy multiple storage items to clear clutter.
  Red lockers and a black desk with multiple areas for storage have been bought from Ikea. Since the lockers go upwards and so does the desk, I can store more things vertically and save space. With the Ikea desk, there are several useful shelves and several magazine holders, which could easily be a sorter for book, notes, and other papers of that sort.

  Note: As Victoria implied, a locker in a room is a really great way to store items while hiding them away behind a closed door. This can also be exceptionally helpful in a situation, such a studio apartment or dorm in which college students are sharing a small space and want an easy way to store their college books and supplies neatly away.

  And I will have to agree with her on the use of a magazine holder. They may have come with her desk (I’m not sure), but you can get them independently. They are a cheap and easy-to-install storage option that can be used for a variety of things. Keep in mind, magazines aren’t the only things you can store in them. Depending on the type of magazine holder that you get, other options include: file folders, random papers you want immediate access to, pamphlets and anything else that you can think of that would fit without too much trouble.

• Make use of extra storage areas for more storage options.
  At the top of the desk, there is even more space to put books, mainly thicker albums, dictionaries, encyclopedias etc. Also, the locker walls are made of metal so you can write on them with white board markers if you ever need to remind yourself of something or if you just want to doodle. Next, since I’m the only one living in this room, my bed is fairly small but big enough for me to sleep in leisure. This provides extra space for extra storage for things like jewelry, books, knick knacks, etc.

• Make use of a storage cart which does double-duty.
  Also take care to note that Victoria used a storage cart at the end of her desk. She not only used it to store her items away but doubled it up as a printer stand. My sister did something like this in her studio apartment, I believe. But it’s always worthy of praise when I see it again. It’s an affordable multi-purpose option that will hide away many items that would otherwise get in the way. This is a fabulous way of handling things when you don’t have much money and you want a very logical way to sort random items out. Fabulous job, Victoria!

Highlights of Sara’s Room

• If like Sara, you have a closet and want to conceal your storage belongings. Consider using a decorative curtain. Or you could go to a craft store, pick out some nice fabric, alter it a little and hang it up. This is a cheap way to keep the color scheme or current theme in your room going.

• Check out Sara’s matching hanging lamp! We think of table lamps, clamp lamps, floor lamps and often wall-mounted lamps. But don’t forget another space saving option to add additional lighting to your room could be to use hanging lamps or lanterns.

  You could buy one that suits your liking or make your own. They’re cheap and fairly easy to make and would contribute to that unique one-of-a-kind look and feel you might be going for.

• Don’t miss what Sara did with the shelving support/brackets in the last photo. This is a really great idea. Look closely and you’ll see she took advantage of the situation and hung a necklace or two up on them.

  If you have jewelry or similar items lying around you could take advantage of a similar shelving system and use your jewelry to add a little spice to your walls. Not only will they spruce up your room a little, but you’ll also be doing yourself a favor by getting them out of the way. Clever idea, eh? Wonderful job, Sara!

There are many things in my bedroom (10’ x 11’) that I consider special and unique. First of all, my bed is very different from most. It is a daybed and it is also decorated with a furry comforter and an overlay with hanging pompoms that was hand-sewn by my mother. (She also made the curtains–she’s always making the cutest stuff for me!) The tile board above my desk is another unique attribute in my room. I am always adding new pictures of my friends and decorating the chalkboard for the holidays. The unique dress form, wall border and plaques, furry white rugs, and the pompoms hanging from my doorway also add a genuine and feminine touch to my room. However, when it comes to space saving, the shelf around my ceiling that holds my many purses, my daybed, and my mirror come in handy.

Every girl has a favorite accessory. Mine happens to be purses. Small or large, colorful or plain, I love them all! This shelf is extremely essential because it saves space in my closets by holding my total of 62 purses. If I did not have this shelf, I have no idea where I would be keeping all of them! Also, this shelf is useful because I can display my collection proudly to whomever visits my room.

A couple other pieces of furniture in my room that I consider space-savers are my daybed and mirror. In my opinion, a daybed occupies much less room and it creates a more open space in the center of the room. As for my mirror, although it might appear ordinary, it has shelves on the back that hold items I do not have room for. Another bonus about the mirror’s shelves is that no one can see what is on them so it does not matter if it’s a little cluttered!

Highlights of Tara’s Room

• Add a cornice to decorate your window
  You’ve heard me talk about valances and maybe even swags, but we haven’t discussed cornices. If you want a clean top treatment with simple lines, cornices might be the option for you. Like valances and swags, you can use them by themselves to add style or use them with sheers and avoid the heavy look that draperies often have.

• Use a chalkboard as wall decor
  Tara got really creative and hung up a chalkboard and decorated it with craft supplies. This is a really awesome idea. I would’ve never thought of that. A bulletin board, yes—a chalkboard no. What’s great about the chalkboard idea is that even if you spruce it up, you can still leave room to write notes, reminders or whatever you need to put on it. Pretty cool!

• Use handbags to compliment the decor
  This is a good example to show that many things can create a decorative look and feel. In this case it is handbags. Wall-mounted shelving provides a great way to save space while keeping a large collection of sentiments out of the way. Consider doing this with anything that you love collecting that’s big and unique enough to display that you need to get out of the way.
