Go Armless! Create Your Own Sectional Sofa Set
By that I don’t mean break out the hammer and screwdriver.
Actually, I had something a lot more simplistic in mind. So, I’m sorry to disappoint you if you were psyched about starting a new DIY project from start to finish.
I was thinking more along the lines of using armless chairs to your advantage.
All you need to do is find several armless chairs with the right look and feel. And let’s not forget a good price range. Once you’ve got all of the above, then you’ve got yourself a good product for a sectional sofa set.
You can use this idea to make a basic small scale sofa set so that later you have the option to divide it up into 3 chairs or a loveseat and a chair.
Or you could use this idea to create a larger sectional sofa of 4 pieces or more. It’s your choice but when you’re looking you’re also going to want to make sure it’s…
- comfortable
- well cushioned
- sturdy and has legs that plant well on the ground. And that it isn’t too light (so it doesn’t move around on you too much). If you find it might move around on you a bit, consider tying the legs together like this person did to make it more sturdy. That is, if you’re able to. Legs on certain chairs may be too far apart for this to work.
You’ll also want to pay particular attention to the sides of the armless chair. That way you can be certain that your chairs will fit together snuggly without any problems.
You definitely don’t want to get them home and find out that your chairs have gaps in between them and you can’t use them the way you intended to.
Although its beautiful and would probably make a very nice chair on its own, the Broadway Armless Chair might prove to be a good example of the type of chair that may not make a great sectional sofa due to the back of the chair sitting in a bit further than the seat.
Besides using your basic chair, you also have another option that you can take advantage of to make a small scale sectional sofa set.
Consider armless corner chairs.
You’ll need at least 3 of them.
One goes in the corner. And the other two go on the left and right side of the corner chair. And when they all fit together you’ll have a sectional sofa with arms.
You’ll find that not all corner chairs have angles. Some have curves. When looking, be certain to stick with corner chairs with angles since generally curved corner chairs will not fit together appropriately.
Also, if you do go with this idea, you’re sectional sofa will likely be the perfect small space solution. On average, most corner chairs range around 33″ wide. If you multiply that by three, it will give you a sectional sofa of around 100″ wide.
I think the only downside to creating a sectional sofa solely with corner chairs is that there isn’t a wide enough selection so that you can be certain you’re getting something comfortable.
Don’t forget that you can also mix and match different color chairs together to spruce up your living room. That is, if you’re graced with the ability to select different fabrics. Maybe you like the idea of having two white chairs on the end and one beige chair in the middle.
You’re only limited by the colors of the selections available.
What Does This Mean to You?
It’s pretty obvious that many armless chairs out are manufactured for the sole purpose of creating sectional sofas. However, there are still many of them out there that aren’t part of a sectional sofa set collection.
The prices are cheap enough for you to take advantage of the fact that they are armless. So when you put them together you’ve come up with an affordable and comfortable sectional sofa set.
You can put 3 armless chairs together to create a small scale sofa. Later you could even pull them apart so that each chair can stand on its own. Or you could simply move one chair and leave the other two together—leaving you with a loveseat and a separate chair.
Using this idea to create a sectional sofa can be a lot more exciting because they offer you much more leeway to rearrange your furniture and get a multitude of different looks for your living room.
Choosing armless chairs will also allow you to build your sofa as small or as large as you’d like it. And sometimes choosing armless chairs alone will really let you scale down on size.
And as I said above, your choices are only limited to the amount of armless chairs out there and as the selection continues to grow, so do your choices.
