The More You Know…

• Carousel tie racks. This would include the Twirl a Tie. My general thoughts are that they save the most space and are the most practical of all choices. A small circle that holds a heap of ties that goes round and round will likely save a lot more space than its counterparts. But again, it’s all about what’s right for you!
• Battery-operated tie racks. I didn’t include them. Why? Because I’m partial to manual and because consumers tend to dislike them a little more. All in all, I didn’t see a need for a battery-operated one when a manual one would do the job equally well, if not better.
• Wood peg tie racks. Sometimes the pegs come out. I’ve read a few complaints regarding them slipping out. However, am I wrong in thinking that this is a problem that could be easily solved by gluing the peg in with a bit of gorilla glue or wood glue?
• Drawer tie rack. Be sure to notate measurements. I couldn’t quite figure out if this goes with a specific closet set. I looked but couldn’t find anything. However, honestly I need to do deeper research. Yet, even if you don’t have the closet kit, if a specific one is indeed on the market, then take note of the measurements of the drawer. If it works with the dimensions of something you have then there’s nothing stopping you from getting it!

Wall Mounted Tie Rack

I think this is one of the coolest wall mounted tie racks on the market… and a wealth of consumers seem to agree.

However, one disadvantage to keep in mind is that you can’t purchase extra hangers for it, but the pros outweigh the cons by a landslide.

One of the biggest advantages is that it’s discreet. It can be hung just about anywhere since it’s mountable. Remember, don’t just think about walls or closets, consider less obvious places, such as large cabinetry, under shelves or behind your doors.

A Closet Organizing System is the ideal choice when you want to eliminate the need for a dresser altogether. For ease of use, you would hang your clothing on the closet rods and store your undergarments in storage boxes and place them on an accessible shelf (within easy reach).

Or if you find that isn’t ideal or user-friendly, as an alternative you could place your undergarments in a storage cart (wide version) in your closet (beneath the closet system).

When it comes to purchasing a Closet Organizing System, you’ll find that generally, most systems consist of wall standards and various shelving. You can usually get everything you need as a kit.

But if you prefer to have free reign, often hardware stores, such as Lowes and Home Depot offer a shelving section in which you can create a custom-made (closet) system by picking out what you want individually at the store.

Which Closet Organizing Systems to Consider…

Popular brands that offer organizing systems that you’ll want to pay particular attention to are Rubbermaid and Elfa.

If you’re on a budget, then between the two, you’ll likely find yourself swaying toward Rubbermaid since it is not only affordable, but also a popular alternative. Elfa, on the otherhand, is a something you’d want to consider if your tastes are extensive and your budget is fairly large.

Other less popular possibilities are John Louis and Easy Track–both which rely heavily on the use of shelving boards rather than metal shelving.

However, a word of warning before you buy… if you decide to get an Easy Track Closet Organizing System you may be taking a gamble. It has been said to have very poor packing which results in easily damaged shelving. John Louis on the other hand has been said to take a large sum of hours to assemble.

Not sure how to go about organizing a small closet? If so, I’ve got some good news for you…

I have some small closet organizing ideas that I think you’d like. So, today we’re going to talk about the best ways to organize a small closet.

As always it doesn’t have to be a difficult task. A little labor is required but with a few essential tips you’ll be well on your way and wonder why you never did it sooner.

I have 3 steps in mind that will take you from start to finish on organizing a small closet.

And they are…

• Step One: Categorize and sub-categorize your clothing.
  
• Step Two: Do a major clean-up each season.
  
• Step Three: Include the necessary closet organizers.
  

In fact, it sounds pretty darn simple. But let’s discuss each in further detail and so you can make your mind up for yourself.

Step One – Categorize and Sub-Categorize Your Clothing

Initially, if your closet is in complete chaos you will need to do what is considered a one-time major clean-up that will require you to sort through your clothes, divide them up, categorize them and get rid of what you don’t need.

To begin organizing a small closet, you can start simple and divide your clothes up by seasons…

• Spring
  
• Summer
  
• Winter
  
• and Fall
  

And while you’re dividing them up you can be on the lookout for things you no longer want, can’t fit and put them in your “Must Go” pile.

Once you’ve sorted through them all you can then get rid of the unwanted items and then focus your attention on the clothes you’ve decided to keep.

Organizing a Small Closet: Keeping All of Your Clothes in Your Closet

For the clothing you decided to keep you could choose to keep all of your clothes in the closet or if you prefer, you could remove all out-of-season clothes from your closet, fold them up and store them away.

If you decide to keep all of your clothes in your closet, it’ll probably be easiest for you if you make sure your clothes categorized under different seasons don’t get mixed together. And a simple way to do that would be to use something quick and convenient like closet clothes dividers or blank closet dividers.

They will be advantageous to you in most circumstances. That includes even if you decide to remove all out-of-season clothes from your closet and store them away.

If you choose to keep your clothes in your closet, when organizing a small closet, but also need more space or find that your closet is a bit too small for all of your clothes, there’s a solution for that too.

A simple way to maximize space is to use space saving clothes hanger hooks. For each bit of hanging space you’ll be able to hang five garments rather than one.

I’d say that really increases your chance of fitting it all in there in an organized manner, wouldn’t you?

Organizing a Small Closet: Storing Your Out-of-Season Clothes

If it turns out you’d rather store your clothes until they’re in season there are several ways you could go about it.

You could use under-the-bed storage, boxes or if your budget is low and your space is limited you could store them away in your suitcases.

The wonderful thing about using suitcases is that suitcases already take up space so storing your clothes away in them wouldn’t cost you any more space than you’ve already used up.

Organizing a Small Closet: Sub-Categorizing Your Clothing

Once you’ve done that, you may or may not wish to sub-categorize the clothes that remain in your closet. It really depends on the type of person that you are.

Some people excel with a more detailed-oriented system and others simply find it too restricting. So it is up to you what you decide to do after that.

If you do prefer a more detail-oriented system, some ideas on how you can sub-categorize your clothes are:

• Sportswear
  
• Leisurewear
  
• Formal wear
  
• Lounge wear
  
• Sleepwear
  
• Swim wear
  

• Shirts (Long and Short Sleeves)
  
• Pants
  
• Suits
  
• Dresses
  
• Skirts
  
• Shorts
  

Neither option is better than the other. It’s simply a matter of which way would make it easiest for you if you decide to sub-categorize your clothing.

When considering each sub-category, you’ll want to make sure you think about it on a long-term level. When organizing a small closet, keep in mind that sometimes being too detail-oriented can make it harder than it needs to be (in the long-run) to keep things organized.

Step Two – Do a Major Clean-Up Each Season

Once you’re done you’re initial major clean-up, to keep your small closet organized all you have to do now is keep it going.

Many closets tend to get cluttered by the simple fact that they aren’t routinely kept up. To keep it simple and easy, one of the easiest ways to keep your closet clean is to simply clean it during the change of each season.

So, that means you would simply clean your closet out 4 times a year in accordance with…

• Spring
  
• Summer
  
• Winter
  
• and Fall
  

During spring you will simply sort through the spring clothing that you have and get rid of…

• what’s not useful
  
• what doesn’t fit
  
• what’s too old
  

…and so forth.

And that’s how it would go for summer, winter and fall as well.

You may find it particularly advantageous to get rid of clothes at the beginning of spring (and every other season) and purchase clothes at the end of spring (and other seasons).

Especially if you shop for clothes during end-of-the-season sales in department stores.

This will help you keep your quantity-in in balance with your quantity-out flow.

In short, it simply means you won’t accumulate too many clothes. You will simply get rid of clothes that are no longer of interest to you at the beginning of the season and buy equal amount of clothes at the end of the season.

But that will only work well if you have a good amount of clothes after you’ve gotten rid of what you don’t need.

If it doesn’t work well for you to do it that way, keep in mind you can do it all at one time. That is, get rid of what you no longer need and buy equal amount of clothing during the time you get rid of the others.

Step Three – Include Closet Organizers

Once you’re finished organizing your clothes, there are still those small items that can cause big trouble.

Things such as…

• Shoes
  
• Belts
  
• Ties
  
• Scarves
  

And there’s even the possibility that you’d like to exchange out your entire rod and shelving system in your closet. If that is the case we’ll get to that too in just a moment.

But first, let’s talk about those significant items that can add up to big trouble in large quantities. Shoes are a particular problem for many of us. Even for those of us who don’t have many, they can often get in the way and create a lot of clutter.

For that particular problem I recommend using simple cardboard box if you have a very small amount of shoes and you’re on a tight budget.

However, if you have a bit of extra cash and you would prefer something a bit more organized, I recommend using a revolving shoe rack to store your shoes in.

It will not only save you space but you’ll also find it very easy to get the shoes you need at the time you need them since the racks revolve.

And clutter created by scarves, ties and belts can be solved by using a simple
tie rack. It provides you with an easy but efficient way to get them out of the way and keep them from mixing and interfering with your clothes.

But if your problem is bigger than that and you’re looking for a new closet system, then you can consider Rubbermaid’s Closet Kit which may take care of most of your organizing needs that we discussed above.

Many kits can expand and store your shoes, pants, ties, belts and similar items. But keep in mind you generally have to purchase additional items to accommodate those needs.

Remember, organizing a small closet doesn’t have to be a difficult job. It will require some work but with a few logical steps the task is pretty simple.

If you take it step-by-step and do a one-time major clean-up and after that clean up at the beginning or end of each season and then tidy up the small items like ties, belts and scarves that could also serve as a clutter problem, before you know it everything will be in tip-top shape and you’ll be wondering why you hadn’t done it sooner.

I know it’s a pain but there are options you can consider on how to create closet space for a room with no closets. Like many things it’s just a matter of finding the most creative resources and putting them together to get the perfect solution.

The question is what are your options?

1. Create a Closet with Rubbermaid’s Closet Kit
2. Create a Closet with EZ Closet
3. Create a Closet with a Garment Rack and Organizer
4. Create a Closet with a Wall Rack
5. Create a Closet with Racks and Single Unit Hangers

Let’s start with option one.

Create a Closet with Rubbermaid’s Closet Kit

If you’re out of luck and have no closet it doesn’t mean you can create a closet for yourself, right? Right.

There are plenty of closet kits out there. A popular one is Rubbermaid’s Closet Kit which is great for taking care of all of your organizational needs.

Why not simply use this kit on your wall? Closet systems or closet kits tend to refer to using them only with closets, but there’s nothing stopping you from using them any place you see fit.

That means you can use them in a room without a closet as a way to create your own closet center, as long as you have the space for it.

The kit should take care of just about everything you need. However, keep in mind you may need to purchase additional items that go with the kit. Particularly if you want shelving for your shoes and other things.

Also, when mounting the closet, remember you’ll probably have to mount it into wall studs.

One last thing, if you can afford it you may prefer other more expensive kits which include similar options. Elfa Closet Kits are another great choice for you.

Create a Closet with EZ Closet

If you don’t like the idea of mounting a closet kit to your wall, then EZ Closet might be what you’re looking for.

It is an instant closet that leans against any wall.

It can be quickly assembled and disassembled. You can put it up without any concerns about wall damage. The system’s patented gravity-support principle holds everything in place.

The closet is built so that the floor takes the pressure of the weight rather than the wall.

You also get the luxury of two shelves which are said to take 100 lb. weight capacity. It includes all hardware, closet rod and diamond-grid shelves and is made out of steel.

Create a Closet with a Garment Rack

Ever considered a garment rack? If not, it will take care of the majority of your needs.

If you like the idea of using a garment rack, I recommend getting the commercial grade garment rack because it will hold around 150-250 lbs. weight capacity of clothes. So, you know you’re getting something sturdy.

I know of two garment racks that you’ll be very happy with. Both are commercial but there are slight differences between the two.

The garment rack has a weight capacity of 150 lbs. and adjusts by width and height. That means if you need to be a bit conservative on space it’s very helpful with saving you some.

One last thing. It also folds away easily for storage.

The second garment rack rack also adjusts, but only by height. However the good news is it has a 250 lb. weight capacity and a 5 year weight capacity warranty if for some reason the garment racks folds under pressure.

Create Additional Space with Space Maximizers

With either garment rack you can even maximize space by incorporating a space expander which will allow you to section off your clothes by placing your shirts on top and your pants on the bottom or vice versa.

However, before you choose a space maximizer, a word of warning. Pay particular attention to the measurements of each maximizer and compare it to the measurements of your garment rack to make absolutely certain your clothes will work with it and won’t be dragging on the floor.

Another thing you’ll have to consider is that you will still have to deal with organizing your accessories, such as your shoes, ties, belts and scarves but that can be easily solved with a revolving shoe rack and tie rack which will hold all of the above.

Create a Closet with a Wall Rack

If you’re in want of a simple closet, consider the Space Saver Closet Shelf w/Steel Rod. You can mount it on your wall without mounting it into studs, and it’s said to hold a 250 lb. weight capacity.

You may want to be a little cautious about testing that weight capacity without studs though, just to be on the safe side but it all depends on the mounting hardware included. Just be certain to use common sense.

For the top shelf, you could put your accessories. If you don’t have many shoes then it would work well for you to put them on the top shelf rather than sweaters or shirts.

Once you have it up, if you want to maximize your space, you could consider using space maxmizers or a pants trolley with it. If you use a space maximizer it will buy you a second row so that you can place your pants on the bottom row.

If you don’t like the idea of using space maximizers, you could even go so far as to purchase two expandable shelves with rods and hang one below the other for a complete closet. You could hang shirts on the top one and pants on the bottom.

Just be certain to place the top one high enough on the wall so that you have enough room for your clothes once they are hung on the one below.

As a bonus it would then provide you with two shelves. Both of which could serve to place your shoes on. The only thing you’d then have left to do is take care of miscellaneous items like ties, belts and scarves which can be easily solved by using a tie rack mentioned above.

Create Closet Space with Racks and Single Unit Hangers

For some reason you might have an unusual case and can’t hang all of your clothes in one place. If that’s the case, you might want to consider hanging your clothes in several different locations around your room or home.

You can use multiple single units for that. Or you could even combine wall racks and single units together. You could use a wall rack for the majority of your clothes and the single units can be placed in other locations.

A nice wall rack that you might be interested in is QuikCloset.

It will create 3 to 5 feet of clothes storage space anywhere. It’s quick and easy to install and can be linked continually high or low along a wall.

It’s also weather resistant and can be mounted outdoors. The telescopic rod that comes with it installs or removes easily in seconds and it closes flat against the wall when not in use.

It will provide you with extra clothing storage with minimal space used and installation is easy. It holds up to 60 pounds and can also be closed when not in use.

You’ll find that the QuikCloset (above) is just a larger version of the InstaHanger and when the telescopic rod is removed it can be used as two single units as well.

Remember, although you are stuck with a room with no closet it doesn’t mean you can’t be inventive and create a closet for yourself with a great solution that suits you.

It’s just a matter of being resourceful and choosing the best option for your circumstances. You can go with a closet kit, garment rack or even combine different options if one choice doesn’t work well enough for you.

In the end the choice is yours.
