Small Homes: Denise’s Peruvian Reminiscent Bedroom

This bedroom, in Boulder, Colorado, was once intended as an enclosed porch so two of the walls are actually large windows. I took advantage of the natural light by hanging gauze curtains which provided a warm, dreamy atmosphere. Almost all the decor was purchased at thrift stores where I chose fabric colors reminiscent of Peruvian Campesino clothing, inspired by my recent travels.

The queen size bed took up the width of the room allowing slumber to be a cozy and nestling experience. My attention to the room extended to the outside view, giving passer-bys a taste of the potpourri of color and whimsy.

Highlights of Deniseâs Room

  • How to replicate Deniseâs look.
Denise was gracious enough to answer additional questions since this was a bedroom she had and sadly she wasnât able to offer any more pictures since she no longer lives there. Guessing that you might want to replicate her look, yet might be unsure how to do so, I emailed her in order to make sure all the details compensated for what went unseen.

Since she answered everything so well, I think it would be pointless for me to re-explain something sheâs already done a fabulous job of explaining herself. So highlights of her were will come directly from her. That way, you can imitate what she did at a very affordable cost (without question)…

  • Decorate your ceiling with dream catchers and scarves.
Hanging from the ceiling is my collection of dream catchers along with some various translucent and flowing scarves (my other collection). The scarves and dream catchers hung from exposed support beams that roofed the porch.

  • Create cheap curtains with inexpensive fabric.
The curtains were simple gauze that I bought from the fabric store. No scissors involved, I just cut them to fit and hung two pieces on the curtain rod. I had teal, pink and white gauze. It very easy, inexpensive and beautiful way to decorate the windows. They allow for a nice effect with the light, but still provide enough privacy.

Note: Pay particular attention to this. Deniseâs room is a good example that you can decorate a window with two different color fabrics and have it look spectacular. If like me, you never thought of doing something this awesome, well now you have a great inexpensive idea you can bank on.

  • Decorate your walls with tapestries, not just photos.
I also hung up a lizard tapestry for more variation in the potpourri of color. My goal when decorating was to have as much color as possible!

  • Spruce up your floor lamp.
And take note, she added fabric to her floor lamp as well. If you almost missed it like me, itâs in the first picture. It almost appears to be a bedpost. Itâs black with a gold-plated knob. So, donât overlook that great idea either.

Anyway, that was all very well said, Denise. And thank you so much for taking the time out to show us what a great room you had and what your creative mind drudged up. Itâs nothing short of awesome!
